Sherman Indian Museum Archival Preservation Project

Preserving a Unique Photographic Archive

With the guidance of Sherman Indian School Museum Director Lorene Sisquoc, UCR graduate student Leleua Loupe helps research and preserve rare photos of the Luiseņo and Cahuilla people and other American Indians. These photographs are housed at the Sherman Indian School Museum, located in Riverside, California, a few miles from the University of California, Riverside. Sherman Indian School is one of three off-reservation Indian boarding schools still in operation today.

The University of California, Riverside has a long-standing relationship with the Sherman Indian School through its Early Academic Outreach Program. In November 2002, UCR and Sherman co-sponsored a major conference on the history of American Indian boarding schools.

With support from grants, UCR will help preserve the invaluable collections housed in the Sherman Indian School Museum. Scholars will benefit by gaining access to the historic images and documents, but so will Cahuilla and Luiseņo individuals seeking to learn more about their own heritage and ancestors. Researching, protecting, and digitizing these photographs will make them available to everyone.
