Workshop on Southern California Indian Basketry

This one-day workshop introduces participants to the materials and techniques used in Southern California Indian basketry. Opportunity to create a round reed creek-side basket.

Traditional Native American Storytelling

This course examines the foundation of traditional Native American storytelling through analysis of comparative traditional forms with emphasis on its importance to religious and social values. Participants gain a historical, cultural and traditional overview of storytelling and are introduced to Native American storytellers.

Southern California Indian Material Culture

This hands-on series is designed to enrich one's knowledge of local tribes' cultures, traditions, histories and contributions. Replicas created by participants go into a "cultural teaching kit" that can be used in various settings. Workshops include "Toys and Games, Plant Fibers/Cordage, Music and Instruments. Content includes several History/Social Science Standards in grades 3-5.

Gourd Art with Dream Catchers

Course introduces the basic methods and techniques used in creating gourd art. Learn to weave a traditional dream catcher and apply this to gourd art.

Gourd Musical Instruments

This course introduces participants to the history, background and cultural significance of the unique musical instruments made from gourds. Includes instruction on making gourd instruments and the opportunity to create a drum and a Shekere, which is a beaded gourd rattle used throughout Asia, Africa, American and the Pacific Islands.

The Cahuilla and Their Southern California Neighbors

Introduction to the traditional culture of the Cahuilla Indians and other nearby groups such as the Gabrieleno, Luiseno, Serrano, Mohave and Chemehuevi. Subsistence patterns, economic relationships, political circumstances, social organization, status and role, religious practices and beliefs are reviewed.

Native American Tribal Archives and Record Management

This course provides integrated instruction in basic archival practices to individuals who are working Native American and tribal archivists and have expanding responsibilities for archival materials but have not received formal instruction or previous archives education. Learn basic principles that guide archival theory and practice and how to apply those principles to appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of their records. Participants will have the opportunity to to discuss and evaluate their own tribal archives program.

Native American Uses of Southern California Plants: A Botanic Walk

Location: Lake Perris Regional Indian Museum

This one-day workshop explores how indigenous peoples of Southern California used local plants in their daily lives. Participants will take a botanic walk around Lake Perris identifying and learning about the variety of plants used by local tribes to create useful products such as soap, brushes and cordage. participants will have the opportunity to create a seed beater fan and learn how various seeds were collected and processed.

This workshop explores many ways that indigenous peoples of Southern California used local plants in their daily lives. Emphasis is on how local tribes processed and used seeds and made soap, brushes and cordage. These activities include processing yucca root and soaproot (amole) into soap products; using traditional techniques to make broom and brushes from pine needles, soaproot fibers, yucca and wild teasel, and create a seed beater fan.
