A Day Honoring Katherine Siva Saubel
Dedication
“In recognition of her extraordinary contribution to her
Cahuilla people, to this region of Southern California, to the State
of California, and to the world of scholarship;
By establishing the Malki Museum and the Malki Museum Press for
the preservation and study of Cahuilla artifacts and culture from
generations past for generations to come;
Through taking the oral Cahuilla language, and deciphering it,
word by word, meaning by meaning to preserve for all, and reinvigorate
interest in the traditional song, dance and ceremony;
In serving as a dedicated and distinguished representative on local,
regional and state commissions with the charge of preserving culture,
history and sacred sites of the Native American people;
And by sharing her knowledge generously with students, colleagues
and scholars throughout the world who seek greater understanding
of Native Americans and specifically her Cahuilla people.
The University of California, Riverside is honored to present Katherine
Siva Saubel with the Chancellor’s Medal, a symbol of this
institution’s profound respect and esteem. It signifies the
high regard the University has for her distinguished and unstinting
service to her Cahuilla people, to those who seek new knowledge
and deeper understanding of the language, history and culture of
these people, and for all of us who strive to discover what it means
to be a citizen of the world.”
