Dr. Schneider's research interests include the prehistory and ecology of the California deserts; hunter-gatherer economic systems; and evaluation of the applications of geochemical and geophysical techniques used for dating surface archaeological remains. She has conducted extensive archaeological research in the Mojave and Colorado deserts, and has extended research interest to the Middle East. She is especially interested in the acquisition of materials and the production of stone tools used by women in prehistory. The development, design, and field testing of HIPROTECT, an advanced-technology remote-sensing system for the protection of cultural and natural resources from looting and vandalism is a major Preservation Science and Technology Unit project, and Dr. Schneider works closely with government laboratories and agencies, the academic community, Native American groups, and the private sector on behalf of HIPROTECT and other advanced-technology applications to archaeology and historic preservation.
