Professor Gelles has broad interests in historical, political,
and interpretive anthropology. He has done fieldwork in the
central and southern Peruvian Andes, studying, among other
things, indigenous narratives, transnationalism, and the way
that ethnic identities, cultural politics, and "development"
condition highland irrigation. He is the author of Water
and Power in Highland Peru: The Cultural Politics of Irrigation
and Development (Rutgers University Press, 2000; Spanish
version published by the Fondo Editorial de la Pontificia
Universidad Católica of Lima, Peru, 2002). He is also
the co-translator of a widely used text, Andean Lives:
Gregorio Condori Mamani and Asunta Quispe Huaman, and
the coproducer of the award-winning film, Transnational Fiesta:1992.
