Professor Anderson's main field of interest is ecological anthropology, especially the ecology of food production and consumption, and how people use, classify, and think about resources. His fieldwork has involved two years (1965-66 and 1974-75) in Hong Kong, a year (1970-71) in Malaysia and Singapore, and projects in California, Tahiti, British Columbia and the Yucatan Peninsula. Most of the research was on fisheries and fishing communities. He is also interested in folklore and the arts. He is currently concentrating on traditional agriculture and ethnobiology of the Maya.
